Technology
LAUSD Technology Initiative continues our integration of technology into all areas of curriculum in order to equip students with the research, communication, collaboration and creativity skills needed to be successful in the 21st century. Students in grades 6-8 will be allowed to take devices to and from school. Please be aware that:
- Culminating students must return their Chromebook, power adapter, and hotspots at the end of the school year.
- Students not returning to Vista must return their Chromebook, power adapter, and hotspots at the time of disenrollment.
- The student must have continuous access to the district assigned device.
- The device (including chargers) cannot be shared with others, as the student must bring it to school every day and have access to it at home for work outside of class.
- The device must be fully charged each night before bringing it to school.
- The parents of the student are responsible for any damaged or lost devices and fines will be assessed.
RESPONSIBLE USE POLICY (RUP) - LAUSD recognizes the value of computers and other electronic resources to improve student learning, teaching, instruction, research and communication to enhance the administration and operation of the school. To this end, LAUSD provides Intranet (internal) and Internet (external) connections for staff, students, and faculty. LAUSD encourages the responsible use of computers, computer networks, including the Internet, e-mail, and other electronic resources in support of the mission and goals of the district and its schools.
MONITORING OF NETWORK USE - All data transferred and /or transmitted over the LAUSD network can be monitored and recorded at any time. All data transferred or transmitted over the network can be tracked and identified, and originating users can be held liable if their use of the network violates any established policy, regulation, or law. Such data includes, but is not limited to email, text documents, digital photographs, music and other digital or electronic files.
RESTITUTION FOR LOSS, THEFT OR FULL DAMAGE - Section 48904 of the Education code provides that parents and guardians are responsible for property loaned to students. The school is authorized to withhold the grades, diploma, and transcripts of the student, or to deny participation in school activities that are deemed privileges (i.e. culmination, dances, student body office, interscholastic athletics, or other local school activities) until the debt is cleared. If a device is damaged, lost, or stolen, the student or parent/guardian should immediately notify the Technology Office to complete the “Vista Lost or Stolen Report”. If the device is lost, stolen, or damaged as a result of irresponsible behavior, the parent is responsible for the replacement cost, Chromebook: $350.00, iPad: $250.00. Power adapters must be returned or paid in full.

Vista Middle School provides a program of voluntary work in lieu of payment of monetary damages.
PROHIBITED ACTIONS - The following actions on the LAUSD Network are specifically prohibited, and are not limited to: Installing software, software application, utility, plug-in or other such operations without the approval of the Technology office. Prohibited Actions include:
- Vandalism of school technology including but not limited to tagging, damage to keyboards, deliberate damage to the device.
- Creating, downloading, storing, sending, or displaying offensive messages or pictures including but not limited to pornographic or other sexually explicit material
- Using obscene, profane, or vulgar language
- Harassing, insulting, intimidating, or attacking others
- Giving out personal information about another person, including home address or phone number
- Engaging in any practice(s) that threaten the network and other technological tools
- Violating copyright laws
- Downloading entertainment/music/video/movie software or other files for transfer to a user’s home computer, another personal computer, DVD, or any music/movie device.

https://device.lausd.net/. Parents will receive a notification email with a barcode. Please make sure to bring a copy of the email and/or barcode with you to the office to claim the device.
